Halligan Bar:  Hal-li-gan Bar

  1. Noun:  A Halligan bar (also called a Halligan tool or simply Halligan) is a special tool commonly used in the fire and rescue service.  It is a multi-purpose tool for prying, twisting, punching, or striking. It consists of a claw (or fork), a blade, (wedge or adze), and a tapered pick, which is especially useful in quickly forcing open many types of locked doors.  The Halligan Bar is standard equipment for fire departments from North American to New Zealand, making them possibly the most widely-deployed tool in fire fighting today.

Place:  The Halligan Bar & Grill:  Shockoe Bottom's "HOT" spot, will capture the essence and mystique of what it truly means to be in the fire service.  The restaurant is a virtual museum and tribute to past and present firefighters of all jurisdictions.  We have accomplished this by creating an atmosphere that is comfortable to all members of the fire service as well as an awe inspiring ambience for the general public.  The focal point of the bar is the 1973 Seagrave fire engine that was donated by Mangohick Volunteer Fire Department.  She will proudly serve her remaining days memorialized here at the Halligan Bar.  The owner, a veteran of the fire service, has provided a vision which displays all the traditions and passion of firefighters who have served and still serve today.  The Halligan Bar & Grill is a tribute to all public servants and those who support the service we provide.  We welcome you to feel the pride created by Central Virginia's most beloved public servants – FIREFIGHTERS!

Of course, firehouse food is legendary, and Halligan serves southern Virginia barbecue, chicken and "the wholesome, rib-sticking meals you'd get in a fire station.   From the Pump, Hook and Ladder beer from Silver Spring, Md., will be on tap; Wings of Fire, First Due and National Standards top off the menu at Halligan.  To accommodate the various shifts and schedules of firefighters, the grill will be open for lunch and dinner daily.   With only 35 seats, those bellying up to the diamond-plate running board will feel the closeness of their calling — and a fire hose set into the bar top will be one more familiar image in this home away from the firehouse.
